Al-Iman School attends Model UN '06

By Umair Sheikh of Grade 9
New York, May 20, 2006 - Twenty three students of Al-Iman School came out shining again this year when they stepped into the shoes of Ambassadors and attended the prestigious Model United Nations 2006. They proved their commitment to excellence, to their religion, community, parents, teachers, and to themselves by being ambassadors for peace.

Al-Iman School is the only Islamic School in North America that is a member of prestigious Model United Nations in which students from some of the best schools across the world participate.

Some students pose at the entrance of the United Nations Headquarters. While others above (insets), were actively involved in the process of drafting resolutions, debating, delivering speeches, and representing Al-Iman proudly at the Model UN in the spirit of peace.

Al-Iman's students were the most prominent among all others because of their numbers and also because of the Islamic etiquettes they exhibited, both in terms of their behavior and dress. “Those Muslim students were truly impressive in the way they were dressed: girls with Hijab and boys in suits, yet maintaining their Islamic identity", commented an observer representing another school.

The delegation of Al-Iman School consisted of 23 students who took an active part in writing resolutions, drafting proposals, debating and delivering speeches. 11 of these students represented the country of Yemen; whereas, 12 members represented the country of Iceland. The Ambassador for Iceland was so pleased with the Al Iman delegation that he personally called the School and provided information for them to use.

Al-Iman's Model UN delegation consisted of two general camps: The Yemeni Team led by Brother Umair Sheikh of Grade 9 comprised Brother Syed Mohammad Razvi of Grade 10; Sister Syeda Farva of Grade 7; Sister Sarah Khalil of Grade 7; Sister Farah Younas of Grade 10; Sister Nilofer Lodhi of Grade 9; Sister Sara Saleh of Grade 7; Muzzammil Ali of Grade 8, Brother Mohamed Alaouie of Grade 7; brother Shazib Syed of Grade 9; and brother Muhammad Abbas Jaffer of Grade 8. Delegates on the Iceland Team led by Sister Anum Iqbal of Grade 12 were Sister Zehra Jaffri of Grade 11; Amena Umer of Grade 12; Saleha Lodhi of Grade 12; Sister Sarah Sakina Naqvi of Grade 11; Sister Noranne Ahmed El Attal of Grade 8; Sister Zeinab Rakka of Grade 7; Sister Sara Syed Hadi of Grade 12; Sister Jasmine Hamada of Grade 12; Sister Aisha Ashfaq of Grade 9; Sister Mahrukh Mujjahid of Grade 7; and Sister Tasleemah T. Lawal of Grade 8. For more in depth details on Al-Iman's participation, please read, "Our Three Days as Ambassadors to United Nations", a narrative by Umair Sheikh of Grade 9 and Mohamed Alaouie of Grade 7.

These Ambassadors were among the 2,300 students chosen to go to the Model UN from around the world including Schools from Mexico, Sweden, UK and many other countries. To be eligible to participate and represent the school in this prestigious forum the students had to pass tests, quizzes and learn debating rules and procedures.
