According to USIP the Summer Institute is designed to enhance expertise and teaching skills for high school social studies teachers to develop a greater understanding of peace and conflict issues, and to help participants enhance their teaching skills and strategies and expand their classroom curricula. Through a competitive process, approximately 25 teachers are chosen each year from across the U.S. to travel to Washington, D.C. for a week-long seminar during the summer.
The program at the Institute will concentrate on analyzing issues ranging from sources of international conflict to methods of peacemaking, including the exploration of a number of important and timely cases. In addition, the participants will explore different approaches of teaching, as well as discuss the curriculum materials and resources.
Br. Sayed is eager to attend this seminar because he believes it will enhance his knowledge and teaching skills. "This is an opportunity to highlight our school and exhibit our presence in the educational strata of American Society", he said.
According to the USIP it is an independent, nonpartisan, national institution established and funded by Congress, which works to "prevent and resolve violent international conflicts, promote post-conflict stability and democratic transformations" and "Increase peacebuilding capacity, tools, and intellectual capital worldwide."
