Tue, 30 Jan 2007 16:47:00 Attacks on Shi'a Pilgrims in Iraq
Baghdad, Iraq - A series of attacks on Shi'a pilgrims on the day of Ashura left at least 38 people dead and more than 100 wounded. The pilgrims were en route to the Kadhimiya district of Baghdad to attend Ashura events marking the 7th century martyrdom of the Imam Hussein, the Prophet Mohammed's grandson. The last few days have been marred by violence targeted at peaceful Sh'ia commemorations in Iraq, Pakistan and India.
The New York branch of the Al-Khoei Foundation, the largest non-profit Sh'ia Muslim organization in the world, has condemned this violence and termed it as "heinous" and "provocative".
Syed Meesam Razvi, a Representative of the Foundation to United Nations explained this violence as symbolic. He said that it is meant to provoke further violence, since it has taken place during the first week of the Islamic Year.
Last week on Sunday an apparent plot to attack the city of Najaf on the day of Ashura was thwarted by Iraqi Police. Approximately 600 attackers were allegedly dug in the outskirts of Najaf and had plans to put the city of Najaf under siege and kill prominent clerics.

At the most critical juncture in the 14 century history of Shia muslims - you are doing nothing except your typical superficial press releases. Do you even understand how critical it is for you to increase your investment in this website as much as possible? Do you realize that there is no western style news and media platform for Shias? Shouldn't you take this much more seriously and make some real investment with real professionals to develop your site that parallels Aljazeera.com? You are the most powerful and well recognized Shia institution in the West (and Amercia). This places tremendous responsibility on you to systematically develop a communication strategy for Shias.
The whole world is talking about Shias. All news media are covering Shias. They are saying things that are wrong and insulting. They are developing analysis that are misleading. Some are doing that because they don't have any other way to get true information - others are doing it for fun. It is ridiculous when CNN invites Bahai faith people to talk about Shias. But you are busy presenting your lunch and dinner stories. Shame on you. Wake up. See what times we are living in. Imagine the opportunity or alternatively the threats. Recognize the role you can take and the leadership responsibility that you must assume.
Shia blood is being shed all over the world. And you can do something about it. I used to leave long messages to develop awareness regarding protecting Shia lives. I don't want a standard answer from one of you stating that "we are trying our best". I want to see results. Why don't you launch a comprehensive Pan Shia website with daily news coverage and information on faith. Make your coverage professional and truly help Shia message to get across. This is the time when we have much greater expectations from you. Hope you wouldn't fail us.
