Unwelcome Pilgrims

By Zahir Janmohamed
Royal treatment?
For Shia pilgrims to Mecca and Medina, few can forget what occurred in 1987. Each year prior to that, a group of Iranians, Saudis, and other nationals held a peaceful, Saudi government-approved demonstration to denounce internal hypocrisy in Islam (even though it was a not-so subtle jab at the Saudi monarchy). It was a tradition started by Imam Khomeini after the Iranian Revolution and one that continued with barely a scuffle for years.

In 1987, however, an argument broke out between demonstrators and Saudi police in which the police opened fire, forcing the demonstrators to flee in a stampede-inducing frenzy. Over four hundred people were killed with another 649 injured, an event described in vivid detail in the book Iran's Persian Gulf Policy: From Khomeini to Khatami. While discrimination in Mecca and Medina continued afterwards against anyone the Saudi government deemed outside its definition of Islam, actual violence against worshippers rarely did.

That uneasy but stable status quo was broken on August 5th when a group of Shia pilgrims from the US and the UK were physically harassed, verbally insulted, and then detained by Saudi authorities. In a letter now widely circulated on the Internet, one participant, Syed Jawad Qazwini, an Islamic scholar and community leader based in Florida, extensively documents the abuses he saw committed against himself and his group. [Editor: Click here to read Syed Jawad Qazwini's personal account of what happened.]

According to his account, his umrah delegation was praying inside the Grand Mosque in Mecca and were within earshot of a Saudi appointed religious scholar lecturing on Islam. The speaker allegedly repeated familiar anti-Shia canards -- Shia Muslims worship the dead, are hypocrites, and gave Muslim lands away to the enemy (a reference to the support many Shia leaders gave to the overthrow of Saddam Hussain).

A young man then approached the religious police and told them that they should not disrespect Shia Muslims. Qazwini, a 25-year-old Iraqi American, urged the young man to ignore the incident but tension ensued and the police became physical. "They began to hit us with chairs, bats, radio communication devices, their fists, kicks, and punches continually," recounted Qazwini. "They were hitting us with so many blows that I could not hold them back," added another pilgrim, Mustafa Field.

The Saudi police responded with a barrage of insults, reportedly telling the worshippers that they were "all cowards and we will purify the holy mosque from the Shia," according to Qazwini's account. Qazwini then told the police that they were "guests of Allah" and that they were "in no position to go against Allah and the government of your king."

The police officer then pushed Qazwini aside and arrested him, reportedly dragging him to a detention center within the mosque with several members of his group trailing behind. While the detention center was cleared of others, Qaswini claimed that a Saudi official boasted to other officers that he had caught an "Iraqi Shia causing problems".

With the room now empty, a police officer then threw his boot at Qazwini, hitting his forehead. "I was in more pain and I could barely see," wrote Qazwini. "I had a severe headache. He then proceeded to beat me and he was laughing with amusement, telling the rest on the police in the room how good it felt to hit a Shia."

Qazwini recalled crying for help while some members of his group tried to approach the detention center to help him. Chaos ensued as over 30 police officers were dispatched to quell the trouble. Members of Qazwini's umrah delegation were then beaten by Saudi police, some reportedly hit in their genitalia. "Take this message back to America," a Saudi officer allegedly told to the group. Seven Britons and one American was detained for 12 hours until their eventual release, according to the BBC.

The story has yet to be corroborated by any eyewitnesses outside Qazwini's group, and groups like Amnesty International are still waiting for more information before any statement (or action) can be made. Images of some the victims are now circulating on the internet and many of the pilgrims said they plan legal action. Syed Hasan Qazwini, an Islamic scholar and the head of the Islamic Center of America in Dearborn, said the attack was not surprising and part of a very familiar pattern of abuse. Said Qazwini, "This event (is) another episode in a long standing culture of policies which discriminated against Shias living in Saudi Arabia or those on pilgrimage."

In a statement released to reporters, Ghazi al-Usaimi, deputy police chief at Mecca's Grand Mosque, decried these allegations, saying "What the media said is baseless; no assaults took place in the shrine." Repeated calls for comment to the press office at the Saudi Embassy in Washington DC were unanswered.

Interestingly, victims reported that Saudi officials further escalated their assault when they learned of the victims nationality. "They were calling us infidels. When we said we were British and American citizens and wanted to speak to our embassies the beating got even worse," Amir Taki, a civil-servant from London noted in a London press conference. One of those beaten was a 16-year-old British Shia Muslim who was assaulted even further when Saudi authorities learned that his mother was an Englishwoman. Qazwini told reporters, "I think they wanted to send a message to the West, and unfortunately we were the means they used to do so. We were targets for two reasons, because we held American passports and because we are Shias."

Prior to this incident, there were indications that conditions were improving for Shia pilgrims. In October 2006, Saudi Arabia played host to a conference of prominent Muslim leaders calling for an end to sectarian strife between Muslims. But for many, the attack on the pilgrims recalls a painful history of abuse in Mecca and shatters hopes for a more inclusive and tolerant hajj and umrah experience. - END

Please create a high amount of awareness in your community about this issue and have all the members protest this act of brutality agianst Shia Islam.

"America and Britain are the protector of Shias"
is it a crime to tell one's suffering & somebody's brutality ?
why are you so sympathatic towards wahhabis or the saudi's mutawwas.

I am not exonerating USA of its anti-Islamic policies, infact its the entire
Western world & Israel who have been supporting & nourishing forces which

still nourishing and supporting Saudi Arabia, sponsor of Wahabism across the
world..

I think Mr. Qazwini has forgotten Guatanamo and Abu Gharaib and how the
champions of human rights treated the prisioners without any conviction..Or
he has forgotten the indiscriminate bombing and killing of civilian Shias in
Lebanon and Sadr city..Or he has forgotten who supported Saddam in the
Iran-Iraq war and gave a green signal for massacre of Shias in Iraq...hence
his statement that America and Britain are the protector of Shias is totally
misguided and flawed.

Wahabism, Irshad Manjism, Asra Nomanism are all different faces of American
Islam which America is trying to impose on the muslim world...

So Beware of Americanism, *WHICH SURELY IS THE BREEDER OF TERRORISM IN THE

Comment: Mon, 27 Aug 2007 18:40:47 - Salamun alaikum,

I felt deep sorrow on the incident and I dinounce it strongly. I faced the same situation in 1982 in Holy Qaba and in Madinah Munawwara with so called religious police but I was luckily saved by group of Iranians in Madinah Muawwara and Pakistani Wahabis (who thought I was not Shia) which they repented later when they came to know that I was Shia but the time was gone for them. I have also seen this religious police picking up a lady praying in front of Makame Ibrahim (a.s.) when she was in the position of prostration and threw her away only because the rush of tawaf makers was increasing and she was in that police's opinion hurdle for them. I have also witnessed person bleeding from his head due to hitting by stick while he was kissing Hajre Aswad.

The fact is this that these Arabs have the same mentality since years, If we study history, they put the stomache of slaughtered camel on Holy Prophet (p.b.u.h. and his progeny) when he was praying and was in the position of prostration, they also put rope in the neck of Maula Ali (a.s.) and pulled him in the darbar of abubakr, they also squeezed Bibi Fatima Salmullahe alayha in between door and wall of Her house and caused miscarriage happen to Her. They also made horses to run on the Holy body of Imam Hussain (a.s.). Ummayads and Abbasis built their building with the blood of Sayyeds which is too in the history.

That is why Allah has to say in Holy Qur'aan:

AlaAArabu ashaddu kufran wanifaqan waajdaru alla yaAAlamoo hudooda ma anzala Allahu AAala rasoolihi waAllahu AAaleemun hakeemun
9:97 The Arabs of the desert are the worst in Unbelief and hypocrisy, and most fitted to be in ignorance of the command which Allah hath sent down to His Messenger. But Allah is All-knowing, All-Wise. Unfortunately these Saudis are fully supported by U.S.A., U.K. and other western countries which is not a secret and one proof about this is that Canadian government was successful in releazing Simpson a main stream Canadian from Saudi Government via good offices of Tony Blair. This Simpson was proved in Saudi government's record for terrorist attack inside Saudi Arabia and was awarded death penalty by Sauda court. Simpson's companions were punished to death whereas this Simpson was released free. So American and British Pilgrims cannot trust on their governments to get any justice in their favour as their governments have to keep their relations good with Saudi's for oil for their survival, and particularly in this era in the middle east, moreover, after all we are Shia
Muslims and Western governments from the bottom of their hearts dislike us whatsoever they be posing apparently.

If we wish to be the followers of Ali (A.S.) we have to be prepared to face hardships though it is not easy to face which I know very well. May Allah give us courage to face these atrocities.

Mohtaje doa.

To see how america benefits from the Saudi regime (and many others world wide) this video is quite informative. This American economist analyses how US foreign policy works in terms of corporations that control power and politicians and shows how the relationship is with Saudi Arabia as well as Saddam as well as south American countries. The best analysis i have seen so far.

Comment: Mon, 27 Aug 2007 18:37:50 - Salams to All,

I do not believe that lamentations and long-winded reports would attract the attention of the readers. What needs to be done immediately is to send effective and eye-catching reports of the incident to all the media around the world, to all the governments and to Arab League and Organization of Islamic Conferences. The Western governments whose leaders share oil interest with the Saudi family might not take direct interest, but their media might.

I myself have come across the Wahhabi clerics sitting on the pulpit in Masjid al-Haraam and talking against the Shias. They also hire some Pakistani clerics who share their pervert ideology, and who would sell their mothers for a few Saudi Riyals, to speak in Urdu against the Shias.

What is happening today in the Holy Land should not surprise anybody. What these pilgrims faced from personal abuse, the Irani pilgrims have faced en masse since the Islamic Revolution. At that time, many of us simply turned a cold shoulder, thinking that the Iranians were provoking the Saudis.

If we had faced the relaity at that time and stood by the oppressed Irani pilgrims, we could have exposed the Saudi terrorism long time ago.

What the West knows, but would not like to admit is that al-Qaeda terrorists, the Saudi Royal family and the Wahhabi Establishment are one and the same. There is no difference between them.

Comment: Fri, 24 Aug 2007 13:31:37 - Salaams,

There is not a drop of doubt in my mind about the inhumane treatment that is rendered to Shias in the Holy cities of Medina & Mecca. It is unfortunate that the so-called "Guardians/Custodians of the Haramain" are corrupt, brutal and arrogant. Instead of assisting the Shia pilgrims they terrorize, oppress, persecute and torture them for no apparent reason. Their only "crime" is that they are from the Shia sect. Unfortunately to an extent the religious police have succeeded in taking away the charm in the "ibaadat" of a pilgrim by their constant harrassment. It is indeed a shame that one has to watch over their shoulder at all times, lest getting "in trouble" with the police! As American citizens, I hope that our Embassy will probe into this awful experience of Br. Qazwini and help get some answers from the authorities involved.

Jazakallah,

A frustrated Shia

I think this needs to be escalated upto United Nations. This should be
publicised in newspapers particularly in the Gulf. Complaint should be
lodged officially with the Saudi embassy in UK and US. Apology should be
sought from the Saudi Govt for the treatment met out to visitors and
assurance taken that this would not happen in future.
May Allah reward the pilgrims for the trouble they had to undergo just
because they are Shia of Ahlul Bayt.
I am deeply hurt at the news.

From: Murtaza Bandali
Subject: Attacks on Shia Pilgrims
Comment: Fri, 24 Aug 2007 13:23:32 - It was shocking and distressing to read an account of the horrific treatment meted out to Syed Muhammad Jawad Al- Kazwini and his colleagues in Mecca at the hands of the brutal Saudi Police.

This grave incident must not allow to pass unnoticed and unresolved. World Shia Organisations must take this matter seriously and take appropriate action to put a stop to this filthy propaganda against the Shia faith by the extremist Wahhabis. I would urge Al-Khoei foundation to commence urgent action along with other Shia Organisations throughout the world and demand apologies and firm action against the perpetrators of this horrific crime against our brothers and an undertaking that this will not happen again in future if this has not been so far.

First of all we need to involve urgently and actively Human Rights
Organisations and Embassies concerned and ask them to send a strongly worded note to the Saudi Government for the horrendous way our brothers were treated recently by the Saudi Police. Nothing worries the Saudi Government more than adverse publicity against them. Using all means at our disposal we need to bring to light not only what happened to our Shia brothers in Mecca but all the problems the world is suffering today because of these extreme elements who are operating and wreaking havoc throughout the world.

We know well how the Arab and Western world are plotting together with the Saudis because of their vested interests with them and not raising a whimper. Instead of condemning the real culprits for all the problems they are causing today they are conveniently resorting to the game of blaming other nations for the crimes which they have not committed.

It is a well known fact that all these remonstrance, petitions and
complaints just fall on deaf ears. These days leaders of so-called
democratic and civilized countries do not care about the sufferings they inflict on other people especially the Muslims. We must use all possible peaceful means at our disposal to put an end to these sufferings. I feel that the best and the most effective way of bringing about a drastic and revolutionary change today is to go all the way and highlight to the entire world these dangerous and cancerous growth in the Muslim world called the Wahabis and the havoc they wreak on mankind. How about producing an objective, highly professional and a striking film using Western film makers and depicting the ways on the one hand the distorted Islam - the extreme violent ways of the minority sect of the Wahhabis – and on the other hand the true and peaceful ways of Islam as taught by our Prophet(saw). This could be an expensive film but Shiite Organisations I am sure could very well use the resources available and it would be worthwhile producing one.

It should be produced with much thought, thoroughly and professionally and made available to all the Muslims throughout the world. The distribution should be in the hands of a reputable Western Company but with the co-operation and co-ordination of Muslim Organisations so that it could be shown at prime time on television channels and U Tube and all other possible channels for mass viewing. These and other efforts should continue ceaselessly so as to counter the ceaseless propaganda by the Wahabis against
the Shias and other Muslims.

Wassalaam

Comment: Fri, 24 Aug 2007 13:21:24 - Dear brother:

This story does not surprise me one bit as I know what the Wahabis are capable of doing. Saudi Arabia is infested with Wahabism and they play by their own rules. They are ruthless, ignorant and have no value for human life.

No Government anywhere has the ability of stopping them. My advise to my Muslim brothers is to keep away from these hooligans and do what Allah swt has commanded you to do -- Worship Him. Pay no attention to these bullies.

If they see that nobody pays heed to their speech, be it at the Grand Mosque or in the streets, chances are they might stop talking after croaking their voices.

May Allah's Wrath and Curse befall on all mischief makers who are committing Zulm and Injustice.

Subject: The attack on Shi'a pilgrims in Mecca
Comment: Fri, 24 Aug 2007 13:11:40 - Salaam aliekum wrwb

I was truly flabbergasted when I heard of the attacks on innocent pilgrims in the Holy city, infact in the Holy mosque. What I have to say has been said and will be reapeated by others, however to no avail to the IGNORANT WAHABIS.

These attacks on pilgrims is beyond believe of any Muslim culture as not only the Holy Prophet but Allah swt condemns this in the Holy Qura'an. What were the police thinking? what are the Wahabis trying to prove? Have they no respect for the pilgrims? do they feel they are above the Holy Prophet sws and his sunnah? My God unbelievable.

This needs to be stopped NOW!! otherwise if they get away this time, who knows more and more Shias will be targetted every day, every month, every Year.

I spoke to a few American friends of mine who are in the military and they were truly shocked at the news of such behaviour and resorted in sying.."what would you expect from ignorant people.. nothing but terrorism.."

We are open to any suggesstions there maybe to bring this crime into public focus and will work hard to ensure the Jaahil Wahabis (may Allah's curses be upon them) do not get away with it now or ever..Insha Allah.

The brothers and sisters who were victims of this crime our thoughts and prayers are with you and be assured we will not rest until we ensure the Saudi regime takes note of this and the rest of the world. Allah swt indeed used you as examples to expose the evil doers, you are all blessed.

Salaams and do'as
