Holy Shrine Damaged After Blast in Samarra, Iraq

Previous - Next
The shrine of Imam Hasan al-Askari AS in Samarra, Iraq was damaged on Wednesday after an explosion ripped through the golden dome of the Askariya Shrine in Samarra.

Local officials said gunmen entered the Shiite shrine at daybreak on and set off several bombs. The shrine contains the tombs of two revered imams.

Al-Khoei Benevolent Foundation,  a leading Shiite Muslim organization, has condemned the attack. Read More.

The blasts shattered the dome, leaving a gaping hole. There were no reports of injuries.

The explosions continued a wave of attacks on Shiite sites that has been ongoing for days, raising fears that sectarian violence is on the rise.

Following the attack, U.S. and Iraqi forces surrounded the shrine and began searching nearby houses.

When the world's top Shiite cleric, Grand Ayatollah Ali al-Sistani, called for peaceful protests against the attack, thousands of demonstrators gathered near the shrine, waving Iraqi flags, Shiite religious flags and copies of the Qur'an.

Prime Minister Ibrahim al-Jaafari went on television to declare three days of mourning, calling the explosions an attack on all Muslims.

Religious leaders at other mosques and shrines denounced the attack.

A government agency in charge of maintaining Sunni mosques and shrines said a delegation would go to Samarra to investigate.

Samarra is about 95 kilometres north of Baghdad.

Comment: Mon, 27 Feb 2006 13:28:37 - The attrocities against Shias all over the world definitely ask for a rather permanant solution to the problems we have. Its not just Wahabis, its also the west, especially the US who never trusted Shia government in Iran and never let any oppertunity go in trying to destabalize them. Not to forget that its the US who pushed Saddam to wage a war against the revolution and its US and Saudi governments who funded Saddam throughout the war with other European govenments. They are also guilty of betraying the Iraqi Shias in their rebuillion against Saddam regime in 1991 which resulted in massacre of Shias of Southern Iraq. We all know that it was Germany who provided Sadadm the capability to develop Chemical weapans. For the west, like all other nations, self-interest comes first and they would not like the idea of allowing almost all oil-rich regions of the middle east go to a Shia state whose ideology is generally thought of as anti-west and definitely anti-Isreal. So, I wont bet on the west to help us in any way in creating a separate country of our own, I would certainly bet on their non-approval to this idea.
Yes, I completely agree that personal rivalries in Imambargahs can't be generalized as Shia nation not being able to be united under one leadership in one state. It is a brilliant idea and needs to be properly sold among ourselves and most importantly to the region where shias are in majority.
I would suggest a separate space in web to create a discussion group where we invite as much Shia minds as possible and see what shape does this theory takes. It would be nice to see how other Shias feel about this idea (as i think most would love it), their contribution to the idea and to develop a roadmap to success is very important. We should invite intellects from all fields and not to forget the religious leadership for their input.
The most difficult part, as I see, would be to unite shias all over the world over this issue and convince the west not to create any hurdle in this task.

Comment: Sun, 26 Feb 2006 20:24:59 - Islam is a complete way of life and hence by definition it is a socio-political-economic system. Worldly success is just as important, in fact more important becasue it sets the stage for after life. It shouldn't be acquired at the cost of after life but in my proposal there is no such harm. Having a shia state doesn't imply greed or will to power. It is simply the only solution that I see after observing decades of violence against our people. We were not created so that others can satisfy their religious zeal by taking our lives and destroying our properties. Imam's shahadat doesn't mean that Shias should not pursue a strong postion in this world. It also doesn't imply that we are destined for a dark future. If anything Imam's shahadat is a proof that we should neither fear nor compromise with injustice. I am not going against Marja's proposed path. I am simply suggesting that an all shia state is a desirable alternative. Arguments and personality rivalry in Imambaras cannot be compared to the genocide of shias. We will learn to live together. It is a lot easier to do that then to see your loved ones getting killed. Also readers should not assume that our Marjas are not thinking about that today. Creation of an Iraqi federation with South having greater autonomy is the first step towards such acquiring such freedom. May God help us

Comment: Sun, 26 Feb 2006 18:13:06 - Armies of yazid exist today, ready to massacre the true Muslims. Anyone who stood aside when Imam Hussein and his handful companions were slaughtered stood alongside yazid. Today anyone who ignores the killings of shias and demolitions of holy sites stands alongside yazids. History shows resting places of our Imams have attacked and left in ruins many times, one still stands ruined, resting place Janab-e-Syedda and four of our imams.

Yazides only thrive because they have moral and financial support from non-shias. There is no sense of empathy towards shias or Ahul-Byat by Sunni/Whahbis.

Shia unity is crtitcal, we need to support our local leaders, demand of them to bring our concerns to light.

Brace yourselves for a long and painful journey. Its a conspiracy to silence the voice of Zainab A.S. Every crime against shiaism is an extension of

Comment: Sat, 25 Feb 2006 16:46:48 - Well, I just read what our Marjas said regarding the situation in Iraq. Once again they call for Muslim Unity. As Shia Muslims, we must trust our Marjas and if they say something we should follow them. The idea of Unity among Muslims, however, does not mean shaking hands with the criminals. The most important aspect of society in Shia Islam is justice as Mola Ali said that Governments can be ruled with 'Kufr' but not with 'Zulm', and the opposite to 'Zulm' is justice (Adl).
As for the idea of a separate country for Shias, I agree as a separate nation we need a separate country. But, this is not what religion ask. I dont recall any Imam's saying regarding this. The concept of having a separate country for a nation is purely socio-political and therefore should be looked from that perspective. Although I hope that such a concept becomes reality but I dont see it to be a success in the long term. Whoever lives in place like US where Shias from different dissent are living togather can see that its very difficult to co-exist even in an Imam Bargah where the only difference between shias is language (or culture). I have see three major factions among shias, Iranian, Arabs and Pakistani-Inidians (Urdu/Punjabi/Gujrati speaking). If these factions learn to live togather over here then we can think of any possiblity of a Shia country. Otherwise it is good concept that lacks

Comment: Fri, 24 Feb 2006 14:34:42 - Unity among shias and sunnis is nothing but a self appeasing deception. History in its remarkably self evident manner points towards 14 centuries of shia persecution by the sunnis. I can even accept that under certain circumstances sunni shias can live together. But there are few sunnis left today. The sunni world has been taken over by Wahabis. And wahabism has no place for shias. Their blood thirsty philosophy is theologically determined and hence one cannot reason with them. The solution: a seperate nation for shias in the middle east. I firmly believe that establishing balance of power in the middle east is the only way to achieve

This is what happens when there is not tolearnce. People get killed. Important sites get demolished. Violence happens. This has become a continuing cycle of violence and total disregard for the Shia sect.
Our time is one where the concept of "Muslim Brotherhood" exists only in the name. I am not saying that everyone does such crimes, but that the very fact that they occur is a sign that the concept of Muslim Brotherhood does not exist. And people need to realize that, although we disagree with eachother, we are one nation (the Ummah of our beloved Prophet [S.A.W.W.]). We need to create a society of tolearnace. Anyone that does not let us (or them) practice their belifs peacefully should be condemned. DISRESPECT, ESPICALLY OF THIS MAGNITUDE, SHOULD NOT BE ACCEPTED BY ANY MUSLIM. WE MUST LET TOLEARANCE PREVAIL.

Comment: Wed, 22 Feb 2006 17:12:43 - It is clear that shia and sunnis cannot live together. The basic philosophical foundations of both sects are incompatible with each other. Our histories, our beliefs and our our heros are different. It is time to accept and acknowledge that.

It is this acknowledgement that will open new doors. I would like to present the vision of a unified Shia state. I think it makes sense for global Shia community to unify and work towards the creation of a separate Shia state in teh Middle East.

Shias should consider liberating the shia majority lands and pulling them together under a federation. This federation should have its own constitution and common defense.

It appears that this is the only way to end escalating violence against the Shias. I think Shias living in the West should lead the vision of the creation of a new Shia state in the Middle East. Shias, with strong philosophical and theological foundations and a high sense or morality and justice, would be significantly more reliable and trustworthy partners for Western nations than those who blatantly disregard the principles of justice and provide no worthy theological foundation for their belief system. Wahabism is an ever growing risk for Shias, for Sunnis and for the world in general. Our country's (USA) security is dependent on forming close alliance with the Shias of Middle East. It is no other nation but Shias of the Middle East that can mitigate the risk against the growing powers of intolerance and hatred emerging from Wahabis.

It is time to ratify the division between Sunnis and Shias. It is time to develop a unified and joint strategy for managing the security of Shias all over the world. It is time to implement the vision of a new Shia

BUT
against whom should we move? aganist Wahhabis?
Wahhabis present Sunnis before us to fight with.
We should find the true root cause behind this which will obviously be the power loving Zionists. They want Muslims to fight against Christians by raising the slogans of Prophet Muhammed(s). They want Shias to fight with Muslims by raising the slogans of Imaam(s).
Come put our hands together all Muslims.. against the brutal hegemonic powers and destroy the greatest Terrorists and their negligent army under the face of Islam.
We must look at our ayatullahs and the leader who would explain the situation and our responsibility. We shoyuld be very well prepared for any sort of circumstances , watch and see strategy or fight, whatever under the pretext of Islam and only for the true cause of Islam , so that the reappearance of Imam Askari's Son hasten.Amin

Subject: Another failure
Comment: Wed, 22 Feb 2006 11:36:58 - Another attack on shias, another holy site bombed and we'll see another lip service from those who are supposed to take care of the security of those places. Everybody knows who is behind those attacks. It is definitely not an act from common Sunni Muslims. It is surely another act of terror from the Wahabis under the safe umbrella of Al-Qaeda. Let me ask US and UK, do you think World Trade Center is more holy a place for Christians than the attacked Shrine for Muslims? If you think not then do you agree that we, the Muslims, have the right to retaliate against the terrorism imposed on us from Wahabis? But No, we are asked to stay calm and remain peaceful since this is not our responsibility. This is security forces' responsibility to ensure security. Do I need to remind security forces in Iraq their primary responsibility? that it is their duty to provide security to civilians as well the holy places. So far, looking at the trend and the number of casualties in Iraq, it is obvious that US and UK forces in Iraq has only one concern and that is, to make sure they are safe. We haven't heard any casualty to these forces as well as to the terrorist insurgents in the near past. They are clearly afraid of going after those real terrorists and as a result, Iraqis have to face the consequences because the terrorists is moving freely. What do I say of "Mighty American Military Power" who is shamefully failed to capture even a single person in 4 years and now since the insurgency started in Iraq another person (Al-Zarqawi) emerged on the scene who is even more brutal. They are the people behind these massacres and bombings and if world peace makers are sincere in their efforts to bring peace to this region and to the world then forget about the empty slogans of democracy and freedom for a while and do something substantial to provide security to the people
