Interfaith Peace Conference Denounces Israeli Attacks

Aug 05, 2006, New York – Leaders of various faith based organizations, Ambassadors and other prominent Americans denounced the disproportionate Israeli attacks on Lebanon and called for an immediate and unconditional cease-fire followed by a political settlement and urged President Bush to work towards facilitating it.

The leaders were speaking at the Lebanon Peace Conference held at Imam Al-Khoei Foundation in New York, on Saturday August 5, 2006. The conference, attended by more than five-hundred people, was called for by Sheikh Fadhel Al-Sahlani during a meeting of expatriate Lebanese Americans and prominent Muslim leaders on July 30. Sheikh Al-Sahlani is the Director of the Al-Khoei Foundation and North American Representative of Ayatollah Sistani.

From Left: Dr. Javad Zarif, Dr. Hamid Al-Bayati and Sheikh Fadhel Al-Sahlani

The Permanent Ambassador of the Islamic Republic of Iran to United Nations, Dr. Javad Zarif, in his comments at the conference, expressed deep regret that once again UN has failed to stop the wanton aggression of Israel which is in its third week. He further said that the UN has done nothing except to repeat the demands of the aggressor for a total surrender to Israel’s atrocities. He warned the UN not to repeat its tragic mistakes once again and that the Palestine and Lebanon can not be over run by their dictates.

The Permanent Ambassador of Iraq to United Nations, Dr. Hamid Al-Bayati joined Dr. Zarif in calling for a workable UN resolution and an immediate cease-fire. He expressed deep concern over Israel’s expansionist designs.

In his concluding speech, Sheikh Fadhel Al-Sahlani, the Director of Al-Khoei Foundation in New York said, “I was personally present in Lebanon when the attacks started and saw myself the miseries and devastation brought by Israel on the oppressed people of Lebanon.”

“The basic amenities of life like food and shelter in Lebanon have been destroyed.” He further added.

Sheikh Al-Sahlani stressed that concerned citizens should show solidarity and support to the already suffering people of Lebanon by our moral, material and financial help. He condemned the neighboring Arab States for their indifference in the matter and stated that we will be the winner regardless of the outcome of the war, as we are the students of the school of Qur’an.

Others who were present and spoke at the meeting were, Dr. Safdar Chadda, President of the Council of Masajid and Islamic Centers in Nassau and Suffolk Counties in New York; Mr. Lufforz, Chairman Queens Anti War Committee; Mr. Ghulam Dinani, Vice President of World Federation of Khoja Shia Ithna Ashari Muslim Communities; Dr. Khurshid Khan, President Islamic Circle of North America (ICNA); Mr. Ahmed Ismail, Representative of Lebanese American Community; Sheikh Tariq Yusuf, Imam of Mosque Olul Al-bab; Mr. Omar Muhammadi, President of CAIR and NYC Commissioner on Human Rights and Rabbi Dovid Weiss.

It maintains a General Consultative Status with ECOSOC of United Nations and is known for being a staunch advocate for the rights of the worldwide Shiite Muslim community.

Subject: Denounce the Saudis
Comment: Mon, 07 Aug 2006 23:29:59 - The sole beneficiaries of the Lebanon-Israeli conflict are the Saudis. Operating under the doctrine of making their two enemies fight against each other, Saudi’s nearly achieved their overall goal of embarrassing Israel and annihilating Shias. Shias are suffering from Israeli attacks while Israel is losing credibility in the world. Shias are getting killed and Israel’s image is being destroyed. Israel, the fourth mightiest army in the world is now being viewed as ferociously cruel. That is not all as Saudis have more to gain by benefiting from the recent rise in oil prices. Arab-News reports that Saudis are already getting excited about the prospects of returning to Lebanon after the ceasefire and making investments. Needless to say, these Saudi investors would find economically devastated Lebanese more than willing to sell their properties for nothing. Once Saudis have established strong financial position in the area, the Shia majority can easily be placed under economic and political siege. Like Bahrain, Wahabi backed governments would deprive Shias of their freedom and power in Lebanon.

Unfortunately both Shias and Israelis became victim of the Saudi plot. The nearsighted Washington strategy failed to take into account the fact that today’s major terror organizations were directly or indirectly spun out of Saudi regimes commitment to spread Wahabism. Unfortunately, President Bush and his advisors are not seeing that five or ten years from now Saudi or another Saudi backed Wahabi country or group may rise again and leave us with another 9/11. The problem is that while Israel and American hatred is a widespread phenomenon in the Middle East, the most threatening force against the West would come out of Wahabi faith and not Shia faith. The reason is simple: Shias have strong institutions, intellectual prudence, and value system that is based upon kindness and compassion (as taught by the Shia Imams). Wahabis have no such institutions or scholarly research and the Wahabi value system is based upon brutality and cruelty. Hence while Shias and the US have found themselves in hostile situations against one another, Shias have never targeted US civilians. Even Iranian regime, that is considered somewhat extremist on our standards, has never killed a US civilian/citizen. But Wahabis have killed thousands of US innocent civilians and have killed thousands of non-US civilians in Baghdad, Bali, Mumbai, Karachi, Kabul, London and the list goes on and on. Let us not forget that Saudi regime has created these terrorist groups. Saudis are now attempting to get WMDs from Pakistan and that would create the biggest threat for both Israel and America. Shias know the cruelty and brutality of Saudis as they have lived with it for decades. West was only exposed to it after 9/11.

Unless America expects to be in the Middle East forever and Israel expects to constantly fight for yet another 50 years – it is imperative to strengthen Shias of the Middle East to become a buffer against the spread of Wahabism and related extremism. If the tsunami of terrorism that spread throughout the world from Saudi funded madrasas was bad – wait till they get access to Pakistani nukes. In their hearts and minds they hate America - they are simply better in hiding it. Saudi Arabia is the biggest threat to America, a ticking time bomb. And while I respect greatly publicized Bush family friendship with the Saudis, that friendship would not be enough to protect us agaisnt the likes of Bin Ladens being groomed in Saudi Arabia. America needs a strategic change in its foreign policy. Our policy must revert back to our values of democracy and freedom - even in Saudi Arabia.
